History of New Faith Free Methodist Church

The decade of the 90's was seven months in infancy when the embryo of New Faith existed, not as a premature birth, but a living being that dared to be. It was a beginning as though on foreign or forbidden soil, but yet a beginning who's incubator did not reject and sufficiently protected the infant from the hazards of internal injury of mind and soul, malnutrition of the spirit and trauma of the after-shocks of defeat.

This infant that was named New Faith Methodist Church was born at 3525 27th Avenue South, in the home of Lounell Britt and Mattie Gardner. This child of three weeks pregnancy counted every week as three months, which equals nine, thus a full cycle nine month pregnancy and a normal birth. Fertilized and conceived in the womb of prayer, Bible Study and faith, this New Birth miracle came forth in the rough to be processed, assembled and purified as pure gold and as a treasure in an earthen vessel.

From birth in the Britt and Gardner home on July 28, 1990, with 30 people forming a covenant, the ship was launched. With initiative, foresight and God's blessing, the Elim Seventh Day Adventist Church was made available at 801 6th Avenue South. We are grateful to Pastor Harris and the Elim Family for sharing their facility.

On the first Sunday in August, August 6, 1990, in the Elim Sanctuary, New Faith's first public worship service was held. By the time of the completion of service, 100 people had become official members of the new and exciting adventure. Yes, there was much fear and trembling, but faith, determination, and the resolve that it was God's will covered all things that would hinder health and maturation of this infant church. The installation of Pastor Curtiss L. Long on the fourth Sunday in November attracted members from Holsey Temple CME Church in Atlanta, Georgia, and relatives of the pastor from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. All were people who were under our pastor's leadership. With several local churches participating in a week of service, the culmination was a great celebration.

On February 12, 1993, New Faith purchased it's first home, and our present location, the Jordan Park Church of Christ. By Spring of 1997, two additional lots and the annex had been purchased. Nine (9) years later New Faith aggressively began pursuing the construction of a new building, as our All Purpose Annex, to replace the current infrastructure. In 2006, we secured funding to erect the Mattie C. Gardner All Purpose Building. God has truly blessed us, as evidenced in our past glorious years. But the future looks even more glorious. God is not through with us yet. The harvest is still plenteous and the labors are still few, but we shall persevere and continue to pray that God will send forth laborers into His vineyard.
